5 Signs it’s Time to Declutter Your Closet
It’s official – we’ve built the foundation of the items that you should have in your wardrobe (see previous posts for reference). Now it’s time to acknowledge the five signs that you need to declutter your closet. This should be a checklist reviewed at least once a year to ensure you’re
getting the most out of your wardrobe.
The Fit
Most of you probably knew this one was coming and for good reason. More often than not, we
convince ourselves that one day we’ll be able to fit back into an outfit that we once loved. Unfortunately, we end up pushing it to the back of our closet and ultimately forget about that
body goal we wanted to reach. We shouldn’t hold on to things that no longer serve us -figuratively and literally.
Stress
If you’re consistently feeling stressed and overwhelmed when you need to find an outfit and feel like you can’t find anything to wear, then you need to start reevaluating which pieces deserve to stay and which need to be kicked to the curb. Decluttering will definitely help in creating a more harmonious and peaceful space in your home.
Beyond Repair
We’ve all been there – we loved a particular item and kept reaching for it the most. While you may have gotten your cost per wear, unfortunately it is now showing that wear AND tear. If it can be saved with some patching (that is also cost effective), then by all means, get it repaired before it deteriorates further. However, if the cost to fix it, is greater than what you originally
paid for, then it’s time to invest in a new or similar item.
Outdated
Style is subjective so this point of an “outdated” item boils down to whether you would repurchase an item if you saw it in stores today. If yes, than of course hold onto pieces that you genuinely enjoy and still find value in. However, if the answer is no – well you already have your answer.
New Purchases
Truthfully, I struggle with this point the most, because I am a shopaholic. However, the older I’ve become, the more I’m realizing that it’s better to create space for the new additions that more accurately reflect my current style. Plus, it’s best to look into websites like Poshmark,
Depop, eBay, etc to resell some of your items, which by girl math – your new purchases get cancelled out. A win is a win!
What About You?
Now I’m curious to hear from you – how do you determine which items to keep or get rid of? Also, do you prefer to resell your pieces or donate it?
